Blending Construction Machinery & Innovation
Milton CAT had a mission to drive their influence throughout western New York and to establish Milton CAT’s impact of interconnected technology and customer experience. In 2019, they purchased the 20-acre former site of Spaulding Fibre manufacturing site in the City of Tonawanda, NY for their new 40,000 sf Sales, Service, Parts, and Leasing Facility.
Colby Co’s was commissioned as the Design Team and they quickly onboarded RWH as the Architect in October 2019.
Milton Cat stressed the need for improved safety and efficiency to support a diverse program of sales; service; rentals; merchandise; and a two-acre machine operation and demonstration area.
Milton CAT is commonly known for it’s stark, nondescript warehouse exterior, however, RWH designed a dramatic curtain wall expressing Milton CAT’s commitment to the latest modern technology and brand experience. Being such a divergent of the Client’s predictable look, the design never made it to the Milton CAT decision-makers.
Then, Spring 2020 came and COVID hit. Like many design and construction projects, the project was paused - with even discussions of it never coming to fruition. Luckily, in late summer 2020, the project was picked up again and meetings once again commenced. During the project’s revival, Milton CAT President Christopher Milton saw the curtain wall drawing and proclaimed the look was what he has been asking for for years.
This energy further revitalized the project. The modern, digital and forward-thinking design united RWH and the Milton CAT facilities team as they worked closely to create a property that is inviting, engaging, and efficient for customers.
With its Grand Opening in February 2022, the 13th Milton CAT facility fosters the goal of establishing Milton CAT as a convenient and trusted partner for commercial and residential customers. Even more, this is the first Milton CAT location featuring SITECH Northeast, a provider of comprehensive construction technology Trimble. The demo area is utilized for both Caterpillar machine and Trimble technology sales and training demonstrations.
Other special features include Milton CAT service areas with bridge cranes; a 10,000 sf earthmoving machine service shop; a fully stocked hydraulic hose repair center enabling most repairs to be done in under 30 minutes; five automated vertical lift parts stocking systems (VLMs) storing 22,000 items on vertically revolving tracks; five oil reels that dispense triple-filtered oil with a recessed floor and fire-rated partitions; a dramatic two-story sales and office area; staff locker rooms, dining area; functional training spaces; and a two-stop elevator.
RWH is also the architect for Cicero, NY’s Milton CAT / Sitech Northeast Corporate Headquarters. This 100,000 sf facility is set to open Summer of 2023.
