ABOUT ATKINSON NH

Atkinson, New Hampshire is a hidden gem in New Hampshire, nestled among the pines on the southern border of the Granite State. This charming town features cozy neighborhoods and enjoys a vibrant economy, making it a delightful place to live.

Atkinson was originally part of the Massachusetts colony and was established through a land grant settled primarily by Scotch-Irish immigrants in the early 1720s. As the population of nearby Londonderry increased, many immigrants began to move north and west into areas that were predominantly inhabited by Native Americans in search of farmland. Over time, as these towns expanded, concerns regarding Native American issues diminished, allowing the new communities to thrive. The town was named after Colonel Theodore Atkinson, the landowner of the area that would become Atkinson. Although he never resided there, Colonel Atkinson was the colony's secretary until the revolution and was related to Governor Benning Wentworth, which led to the town being named in his honor.

Living near the Massachusetts border allows Atkinson residents to conveniently reach major cities like Lawrence, Lowell, and Boston, all within an hour's drive. Additionally, they benefit from being close to New Hampshire's largest cities, Nashua and Manchester. The beautiful NH seacoast is just a quick thirty-minute drive to the east, while the scenic Lakes Region and White Mountain National Forest are about an hour to the north.

Atkinson features a deep, rich history that goes back centuries. For starters, the area is home to America's Stonehenge , which historians have said is "most likely the oldest man-made construction in the United States". The town also plays host to the Atkinson Historical Society[K1] , which celebrates the history with numerous events, as well as the Kimball House Museum.

Atkinson's nearby culinary scene is fruitful. One of the top-rated restaurants on Yelp for Atkinson is Merrill's Tavern. The restaurant offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner seven days a week. Enjoy an al fresco dining experience with ice cold drafts and delicious cocktails inside near the billiards table and the dart board or outside on the heated patio at the adjoining Stagecoach Grille.
