ABOUT RYE NH

Rye, NH, is a charming seaside town that offers a wonderful living experience. Established in 1623, it holds the distinction of being the first settlement in New Hampshire and spans about 35 square miles. Notably, Rye boasts the longest coastline of any coastal town in the state.

Rye offers a charming suburban atmosphere while being just a short drive away from the lively towns of Portsmouth and North Hampton. Especially during the summer months, Rye becomes a hotspot for beach lovers, surfers, cyclists, and anyone who enjoys outdoor activities!

Rye boasts a variety of state parks along the beautiful Atlantic coast, such as Jenness State Beach, Rye Harbor State Park, and Wallis Sands State Beach. Beyond these popular state beaches and parks, you'll find numerous local gems nearby! Pirate’s Cove and Cable Beach are excellent choices and tend to be much less crowded than the state parks.

One of the standout attractions in Rye is the expansive 135-acre Odiorne Point State Park, which also houses the Seacoast Science Center. With its fantastic play area, scenic walking trails, and beautiful vistas, it's a perfect spot for hiking or snowshoeing throughout the year.

Rye may be a smaller town, but it still offers some great preschool and childcare choices. While you can find various local preschools and childcare facilities in nearby Portsmouth and Eliot, ME, Rye has its own offerings. As part of SAU 50, Rye Elementary School provides preschool programs for children aged 3 to 5 for families from Greenland, Rye, Newington, and New Castle. Plus, Rye Country Day School caters to toddlers all the way through kindergarten, giving parents plenty of options to choose from.

Rye Elementary School caters to students in grades K-5, boasting an average student-to-teacher ratio of 13:1. After completing elementary school, students transition to Rye Junior High, a cozy institution for grades 6-8, where the student-to-teacher ratio is 11:1.

High school students from Rye team up with peers from Portsmouth, New Castle, Newington, and Greenland at Portsmouth High School, which is ranked 10th in the state.

Rye may have a peaceful atmosphere, but it also offers a variety of fantastic restaurants to explore. The seafood, in particular, is outstanding!

Here are the must-go eateries:

  • The Atlantic Grill offers fantastic patio seating, convenient parking, and delicious food throughout the year.

  • For a more upscale experience, check out The Carriage House, which is also open year-round.

  • If you're in the mood for laid-back dining by the ocean, Petey’s Summertime Seafood serves casual fare and drinks all year long—don’t forget to grab some lobsters to take home!

  • For a taste of beach-style seafood, visit Ray’s Seafood, which operates seasonally.

  • The Ice House provides a relaxed atmosphere with a kid-friendly menu. You can keep it super casual by ordering from the window, and their ice cream is a must-try! This spot is open seasonally.

  • For a beachside treat, visit Sandpiper Cafe for refreshing smoothies, acai bowls, coffee, and avocado toast.

  • If you're looking for more tasty and healthy breakfast choices by the beach, Common Roots Cafe has you covered.
